President George W. Bush today lifted his father’s 1990 executive order banning offshore drilling.
The new order will do nothing to trigger a flow of new oil or gas, but it does position the president to blame Congress for high fuel prices. “The only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress,” Bush said. “Now the ball is squarely in Congress’ court.” He blamed Democrats specifically for high prices.
Congress is unlikely to act. Democrats, joined by Republicans from states with coastlines to protect, have long expressed opposition to new drilling on the continental shelf.
